You don’t have to add the food coloring if you don’t want.

It is optional, but the way the candy pieces just jump out with the very Christmas looking cookie… the chef’s kiss. 🙂

Why wouldn’t you want that fun?

Also I strongly recommend a gel food coloring because it works better in the batter and has a stronger overall more even color.

Double Peppermint Cookies are a Christmas specialty. Filled with candy cane pieces and a sweet peppermint flavor, these cookies are sure to win any mint lovers heart!

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk the flour, salt, baking powder and baking soda.
  • In another bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  • Add both extracts and mix well.
  • Add your egg and beat until well blended.
  • Add the flour a little a time, scraping down the sides of the bowl until fully incorporated.
  • Gently stir 1/2 cup of crushed peppermint into the batter.
  • Scoop or form 2" balls with the cookie dough. Dip the cookie dough into the remaining crushed peppermint candy. Place 2" apart on a lined baking sheet.
  • Chill for about 5-10 minutes in the refrigerator.
  • Bake cookies at 350 degrees F for 6-8 minutes.
  • Cookies should be soft when removed. Allow to cool on baking sheet.
