Easy Apple Churro’s with Dulce De Leche #sundaysupper

Apple Churros TitleI was pretty excited when I heard our theme this week was Global Street Foods for #SundaySupper. The problem was, I hadn’t sampled a lot of street foods. Here in St. Louis, we don’t have a normal “street food” so all I could think of  was taco’s, hot dogs and… drum roll please… Churros! I lived in Miami, Florida for a year when I was 20 and Churro’s were EVERYWHERE. We bought them all the time. All.The.Time.

I miss living somewhere I could get them all the time, however I don’t miss living in Miami, Florida. Well, okay I might miss the beaches a little. And a few of the great friends I had when I lived there… but other than that, I only miss the Churros. So I decided that was what I was making.

And to kick it up a notch, since it’s Back to School time at our house, we decided to make an apple version instead of the traditional version.

You could very easily leave out the shredded apple, and substitute water or milk for the apple juice and have a more traditional churro. We liked these.

Now I did title this post “Apple Churro’s with Dulce De Leche”, and during our photography session, we completely forgot the dulce de leche. So it’s not pictured. However, I’m going to tell you how to make it. It’s ridiculously easy, but it takes some time.

How to Make Dulce De Leche: You need a single can of Sweetened Condensed Milk. Remove the Label completely. Set the can in a crockpot. Fill the crockpot with water until it completely covers the can. Turn it on high at cook it for 4 1/2 hours. You can do this on the stove as well, fill a large pot with water, put in the can completely covered with water and boil on the stovetop for 4 1/2 hours.

When it’s done, allow it to cool for a bit before handling it, obviously. Once it’s cool enough to touch, remove the lid on the can and stir the creamy dulce de leche and you’re good to go. Makes great dip for fruits, churros, goes great drizzled over any flavor of ice cream and drizzled over cakes. You can google if you’re looking for more ways to enjoy it, because there are a LOT!

For the Churro Dough
  • 1 cup of Apple Juice
  • ¼ cup of shredded apple
  • ½ teaspoon Salt
  • 2½ Tablespoons Sugar
  • 2¼ Tablespoons of Olive Oil
  • 1 Cup of all purpose Flour
  • ½ Tablespoon of 5 Spice
For the Sugar Coating
  • 1 teaspoon of 5 spice
  • ¼ cup of sugar
  1. In a deep pot, heat the vegetable oil on high. You want at least 2 " of vegetable oil in the pot.
  2. In a small pan over medium heat, stir the apple juice, salt, 2½ tablespoons of sugar and the olive oil until it starts to boil.
  3. Remove from stove and immediately stir the flour, five spice and shredded apple into the pan. The dough will get VERY thick, but do your best to get it all mixed up. I actually used my stand mixer so I wouldn't break my arm after the first time I made them. haha
  4. Once you dough is well mixed, spoon it into a pastry bag with a large star tip.
  5. Now it's time to work with the dough.
  6. Pipe strips of dough into the oil. I suggest only doing one or two at a time, because they tend to want to hug each other no matter how wide your pan is. You can do them as long or as short as you want. We stuck with about 4" to make them easier to eat, but you could make them 8" if you want.
  7. Pipe a strip, fry it until it's a light golden brown and remove immediately.
  8. Drain them on paper towel to soak up all that extra oil.
  9. When you have completed all your fried churros, in a bowl mix up the sugar and the 5 spice for the coating.
  10. While the churro's are still warm, roll each churro in the sugar/spice mixture until fully coated.
  11. Enjoy!

    Did you know we have special equipment to fill churros with dulce de leche here? It’s a thick and long needle filled with ddl, inserted in the middle, so it’s filled with the stuff. Churros are one of our sweet street foods, so fantastic when just made. Love this recipe Nicole! Now I know I don´t have to try and see which one works..lol!

    Fried dough = good. Fried dough with added apples = better. Fried dough with apples, topped with dulce de leche = the BEST. That is all.

    I love churros way too much for my own good! These look fantastic…and who needs the sauce anyway? I would eat that whole batch as-is! 😉 I love your addition of apples, as well…these WILL be made in my house very soon. WILL!

    Nicole, these are incredible churros! They look better than the ones I see for sale. I love that you made them apple flavoured and paired it with dulce de leche (I’m drooling just thinking about it). My husband would go crazy over these, he loves apple desserts.

    Your churros look absolutely amazing! I make my own dulce de leche (with a slightly different recipe) and it’s always worth the extra effort.

    I’ve only had churros at amusement parks so I don’t know what an authentic one is like. However, an apple version with dulce de leche sounds even better.
