Should I use a burger press?
Using a burger press for grilling can really up your burger game! Here’s why:
- Even Cooking: The press makes sure your burger patties are the same thickness all the way across. This means they’ll cook evenly on the grill, so you won’t have any parts that are still raw while others are overdone.
- Juicy Burgers: Pressing the patties helps keep all the juices inside, so you end up with a super juicy and flavorful burger.
- Perfect Shape: No more lopsided burgers! The press gives you nice, evenly shaped patties that look awesome on the bun.
- Faster Cooking: Because the patties are thinner and more compact, they’ll cook faster on the grill.
- Crispy Crust: A burger press can help you get a nice crispy crust on your burgers, which is what we all want, right?
If you’re serious about your burgers, a burger press is a great tool to have in your grilling arsenal!
What Burger Press Do We Recommend?
We use this Stuffed Burger Press and love it! It allows you to not only press your regular hamburgers but you can stuff them using this device. And you can do so much more with it.
What else can I use a burger press for?
You’re right! A burger press is a handy tool to have around, and it’s definitely not a one-trick pony. Here are some other ways you can use it:
- Sausage Patties: Get perfectly shaped and evenly cooked sausage patties for breakfast sandwiches or alongside your eggs.
- Veggie Burgers: Make your own veggie burgers with beans, lentils, or vegetables, and use the press to get them nice and compact.
- Chicken or Turkey Burgers: If you’re looking for a lighter option, use your burger press to form chicken or turkey patties.
- Fish Cakes: Combine flaked fish with potatoes and seasonings, then use the press to form fish cakes that will hold their shape when you cook them.
- Hash Browns: Want crispy hash browns with a nice crust? Use the burger press to flatten your shredded potatoes for even cooking.
- Paninis and Sandwiches: Use the press to weigh down your sandwiches while they’re cooking in a panini press or on a griddle. This will help them get nice and toasty.
- Bacon: Keep those bacon strips flat while they cook by using the press to weigh them down. This helps them cook evenly and prevents curling.
Basically, anytime you want to flatten something to ensure even cooking and create a uniform shape, your burger press can be your best friend in the kitchen!
Tips and Tricks for the Best BBQ Burgers
A couple of tips and tricks to make these BBQ Burgers (or any other burger recipe):
- Remove ground meat or patties at least 15-20 minutes before ready to grill.
- Never press down on a burger with your spatula. It’s tempting, but don’t do it. It causes the good juices to squeeze out and causes your burger to be dry.
- Use a medium flame. It’s better to do them low and slow to retain the moisture and not dry out your burgers.
- Never over flip. You should only need to flip the burger once. A rule of thumb for medium heat and about 1/4 lb. burger, is to cook the first side for about 4 minutes (look for light grill marks) before flipping (watch though because a thin burger would need to be flipped a little earlier). Once flipped the remaining side should need roughly that same amount of time – until the internal temperature is at least 135 degrees F.

Oh yeah might be the best burger I’ve made yet. Added pickles, lettuce, American cheese with a side of onion rings. Thanks for the recipe. Yummmmmy
In your tips, you mention to grill the first side for 4 minutes and about the same for the second side. In the instructions, you say to grill 12-14 minutes. Huh? Which one is it?
This is assuming it takes you a few minutes to heat the grill but also allows for additional wiggle room for thicker burgers since all burgers kinda of cook at a different rate. Hope that helps.
I used your recipe last night to make my burgers and they came out amazing! Thank you for sharing this delicious recipe. I’ll be using this recipe every time I make homemade burgers now.
