Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Italian Bread or Sourdough Bread
  • provolone cheese
  • monterey Jack cheese
  • avocado
  • baby arugula
  • roasted red pepper
  • butter
  • bacon

Ingredient Notes

Bread Choice

Sourdough bread works especially well for gourmet grilled cheese because it crisps beautifully while staying sturdy enough to hold all the fillings. Thick-cut white bread, artisan bread, or Texas toast also work well.

Cheese Options

The best gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches use cheese that melts smoothly while adding bold flavor.

Great choices include:

  • sharp cheddar
  • mozzarella
  • gouda
  • provolone
  • Monterey Jack
  • gruyere

Using a combination of cheeses creates extra creamy, gooey texture.

Avocado

Use ripe but slightly firm avocados so they stay creamy without becoming mushy during cooking.

Roasted Red Peppers

Roasted red peppers add a subtle smoky sweetness that pairs perfectly with the bacon and cheese. Pat them dry before adding to the sandwich to keep the bread crispy.

How to Make Gourmet Grilled Cheese

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients

Cook the bacon until crispy and slice the avocado. Pat the roasted red peppers dry with paper towels.

Step 2: Butter the Bread

Spread softened butter evenly on the outside of each slice of bread.

Step 3: Build the Sandwich

Layer cheese, bacon, avocado, roasted red peppers and second slice of cheese between the bread slices.

For best results, place cheese on both sides of the fillings to help everything hold together once melted.

Step 4: Cook Low and Slow

Heat a skillet over medium-low heat. Cook the sandwiches slowly until the bread becomes golden brown and crispy while the cheese fully melts.

Flip carefully and continue cooking until both sides are crisp and buttery.

Step 5: Serve Hot

Slice and serve immediately while the cheese is hot and gooey.

  • Don’t overfill the sandwich or it becomes difficult to flip
