Sweet Basil and Cucumber Melon Smoothie

Move beyond the ordinary smoothie with this incredibly refreshing and surprisingly delicious creation! While smoothies are often praised for their health benefits, they can sometimes lack excitement. This recipe, however, takes things to the next level.

Freshly picked ingredients are the key: homegrown sweet basil, crisp garden cucumbers, and creamy almond milk form the base. To elevate the flavor, chunks of juicy cantaloupe are added. The result? A burst of freshness unlike any smoothie you’ve tried before.

And the best part? It’s naturally sweet! If your cantaloupe is ripe and flavorful, you can skip the added sugar (agave nectar or honey) altogether, making this a guilt-free and incredibly satisfying drink. So ditch the ordinary and embrace the delightful surprise of the Sweet Basil and Cucumber Melon Smoothie!

Tips for Making the Best Smoothies:

Ingredients:

  • Freshness is key: Use fresh, ripe fruits and vegetables for the best flavor and nutrient content. Frozen fruits can also be used, but they may require more blending time and may affect the overall texture.
  • Variety is your friend: Experiment with different combinations of fruits, vegetables, liquids, and other add-ins to create unique flavor profiles and nutrient combinations.
  • Don’t forget the greens: Sneak in a handful of leafy greens like spinach or kale for a hidden boost of vitamins and minerals. Their flavor is often masked by the sweetness of fruits.
  • Liquid matters: Choose your liquid base based on your desired consistency and nutritional needs. Options include water, milk (dairy or non-dairy), coconut water, fruit juice (use sparingly due to sugar content).
  • Sweeteners naturally: Opt for naturally sweet fruits like bananas, mangoes, or dates instead of added sugars. You can also try a drizzle of honey or maple syrup for a touch of sweetness.

Blending:

  • Order matters: Add ingredients in the following order for optimal blending: liquids, soft fruits and vegetables, greens, frozen ingredients, and finally, any hard ingredients like nuts or seeds.
  • Start slow, then ramp up: Begin blending on low speed and gradually increase to high as the ingredients start breaking down. This helps prevent clumping and ensures a smooth consistency.
  • Use the tamper: If your blender struggles with frozen ingredients or thick mixtures, use the tamper to push ingredients towards the blades for even blending.
  • Don’t over-blend: Blending for too long can result in a frothy or heated smoothie. Stop once the ingredients are well combined and have reached a desired consistency.

Additional tips:

  • Pre-chop: For easier blending, especially with harder ingredients like frozen fruits or nuts, pre-chop them into smaller pieces.
  • Chill ingredients: Using chilled ingredients, including frozen fruit or cold liquids, will create a colder, more refreshing smoothie.
  • Portion control: Smoothies can be calorie-dense, so be mindful of portion sizes. A single serving is typically 12-16 ounces.
  • Get creative: Add fun and healthy extras like chia seeds, protein powder, nut butters, or spices like ginger or cinnamon for a personalized touch.
  • Clean-up tip: Pour a little water into the blender and blend on high to easily clean up leftover smoothie residue.

By following these tips, you can create delicious, nutritious, and refreshing smoothies that you’ll love!

Tips for Storing Leftover Smoothies:

  • Choose the right container:
    • Airtight containers: Opt for glass jars, mason jars, or BPA-free plastic containers with secure lids. This prevents air exposure, which can cause oxidation and affect flavor and texture.
    • Reusable pouches: Consider reusable pouches for individual portions, especially if freezing.
  • Minimize air exposure: Fill the container to the brim to minimize air space and prevent oxidation.
  • Lemon juice trick: Adding a squeeze of lemon juice to your smoothie before storage can help prevent browning and slightly extend its shelf life by acting as a natural antioxidant.
  • Storage methods:
    • Refrigeration: For short-term storage (1-2 days), store your smoothie in the refrigerator.
    • Freezing: For longer storage (up to a month), portion your smoothie into individual containers and freeze.
  • Thawing: When thawing a frozen smoothie, place it in the refrigerator overnight or on the counter for a few hours.

Additional tips:

  • Use fresh ingredients for the best flavor and texture.
  • If your smoothie separates after storing, simply give it a good shake before enjoying.
  • Leftover smoothies can be used in popsicle molds or frozen yogurt tubes for a cool and refreshing treat later.
  • Be aware that storing smoothies can affect their texture and flavor slightly, regardless of the method used.
  • Always smell and taste your smoothie before consuming, especially after storage, to ensure it’s still fresh and safe.

Ingredients

  • cups cantaloupe cut into cubes
  • 2 Cucumbers de-seed a regular cucumber or use a seedless cucumber, sliced. I kept the peel on, but you can take it off if you want.
  • ¼ cups sweet basil more if you like it, I do and usually do a ½ cup
  • 1 cups almond milk I used vanilla to give it a little extra flavor
  • 2 teaspoons agave nectar
  • Crushed Ice

Instructions

  • In your blender, toss in the sweet basil and chop well.
  • Add some of the almond milk. Add the cucumbers and cantaloupe and blend until smooth.
  • Add the rest of the almond milk, the agave nectar or honey and at least a cup of ice, but I usually use 2 or 3 cups of ice. It extends the smoothies and it still tastes great.
