storage tips & leftovers
To keep your leftover chocolate cream cheese tasting fresh and delicious, proper storage is key. Here’s how to do it:
- Refrigerate Promptly: As soon as you’re done using it, put the chocolate cream cheese back in the refrigerator. Dairy-based spreads like this should not be left out at room temperature for more than a couple of hours (or even less if it’s very warm).
- Use an Airtight Container: Transfer any leftovers into an airtight container. This is the best way to protect it from drying out and from picking up any other odors from your fridge. If your chocolate cream cheese came in a tub with a good resealable lid, that can work too, just make sure it’s closed tightly.
- Keep it Clean: Always use a clean knife or spoon when you take some chocolate cream cheese from the container. This helps prevent any crumbs or other food particles from getting in, which can cause it to spoil faster.
- Check the Surface: Before you seal the container, you can gently press down the surface of the cream cheese with the back of a clean spoon or lay a piece of plastic wrap directly on the surface before putting the lid on. This minimizes its exposure to air, which can help keep it fresh.
How Long Will It Last?
When stored properly in the refrigerator, your leftover chocolate cream cheese should generally stay good for about 1 to 2 weeks. If it’s a store-bought version, always check the expiration date on the package as a guide, but once opened, aim to use it within that 1-2 week timeframe for best quality.
Can You Freeze It?
It’s generally not recommended to freeze cream cheese, including chocolate cream cheese. When cream cheese thaws, its texture can change quite a bit – it often becomes crumbly, watery, or grainy. Since you love this for its creamy texture for spreading, freezing would likely make it less enjoyable for that purpose. It’s best enjoyed fresh from the refrigerator.
By following these simple storage tips, you can enjoy every last bit of your tasty chocolate cream cheese! Okay, to keep your leftover chocolate cream cheese tasting its best and to make sure it stays fresh, here’s what you’ll want to do:
- Use a Clean Utensil: Always scoop out the chocolate cream cheese with a clean knife or spoon. This helps prevent any unwanted bacteria or mold from getting into your delicious spread. Avoid double-dipping if you’ve used the utensil for something else.
- Airtight is Key: The most important thing is to protect it from air and other strong smells in your fridge.
- Original Container: If the original container has a good, tight-fitting lid, that can work. Make sure it’s sealed well.
- Airtight Storage Container: The best option is to transfer the leftover chocolate cream cheese into a dedicated airtight container. Press the spread down to remove air pockets and smooth the surface before sealing.
- Refrigerate Promptly: As soon as you’re done using it, put the chocolate cream cheese back into the refrigerator. Don’t leave it sitting out at room temperature for more than an hour or two, as it contains dairy.
How Long Will It Last?
When stored properly in an airtight container in the refrigerator, your homemade or opened store-bought chocolate cream cheese should stay fresh for about 1 week, up to possibly 10 days. Always give it a quick look and sniff before using it. If it looks discolored, has any mold, or smells off, it’s best to discard it.
Can You Freeze Chocolate Cream Cheese?
Generally, freezing regular cream cheese can change its texture, making it a bit crumbly or watery when thawed. This might make it less ideal for spreading smoothly on bagels or toast.
For the best quality, try to use it up within that 1-week to 10-day window when stored in the fridge!

OMG I love strawberry cream cheese; never thought of chocolate! This could be dangerous!!
Me too on the subject of strawberry cream cheese… and trust me… the chocolate is BETTER. 😉 Enjoy! And thanks for stopping by!
That looks really delicious! My little kiddos will surely love it! And I will surely love it too. Yummy!
I’m a diabetic so will try using unsweetened cocoa and unsweetened powdered sugar with no to low fat cream cheese. Loved recipe given but didn’t put choc chips in either. Plenty sweet enuf without for my taste. Thanks so much for this. Was sad when it was taken off the market, but now can have it again. Whee!!
Reread post. Realized that something has to be sugared so will try with either cocoa or sugar being sweetened and see how it goes. Maybe you could give recipe for diabetics so I don’t have to make a mess of it. Thanks again.
Hi Barbara, I hope you can figure out a way to make this to fit your needs. As I am not a registered dietician, or in the medical field of any kind, so I am not prepared to create recipes for diabetics and to feel as if I am serving them well or fulfilling their medical needs. I am simply not comfortable making a claim that a recipe that I have created (if I were to create a separate recipe) was suitable for a diabetic or their nutrition needs. I really do hope that you can find a substitute to help you enjoy your Chocolate Cream Cheese again, and perhaps there is a product out there (maybe a cocoa or sweetener for diabetics) that might help. Perhaps using a product like Stevia or Truvia or a natural sweetener like monk fruit extract or date sugar and adding it to the recipe in place of any sugar in any of the ingredients might help. I am not a medical professional, and make no claims to how suitable this would be for your lifestyle. I only tried to do a little research and see if I could help. Good luck! I wish you the best!
A friend was asking me to find some chocolate cream cheese for bagels; couldn’t find it anywhere!! Your recipe was PERFECT. The only differences I made was that I started with 8 oz of whipped cream cheese, no chocolate chips, and a big slug of Hershey’s chocolate syrup. I was dubious as I’m not a sugar person, but this really IS super good!! Thank you!!
It tastes delicious but as soon as I added in the powdered sugar is became… grainy? What happened? I loved the taste and still ate it… but why?
So usually when you see powdered sugar become grainy, it is because it was exposed to too much moisture before using OR … and the OR is the usual culprit, the powdered sugar was not ground fine enough before use. So this happens primarily which homemade powdered sugar or low quality store-bought powdered sugar. We use low quality store bought powdered sugar in some recipes, but have found that the recipes that really require it to basically “melt” or combine in, we opt for a more expensive brand. I hope this helps. I’m glad you liked them but I’m sorry you had this happen. They are indeed other causes but these are the most common.
