It’s that time of year, time for the big game and cheering on your favorite team! What game do I mean? Why basketball of course! And I have some fun and creative ideas to throw an inexpensive basketball party or event. Not to mention easy recipe and food ideas too!

We tend to go a little crazy when it comes to planning an event or party, especially with a theme. As you can see from all these photos, we had lots of orange and black and basketball fun!

It isn’t difficult to throw an inexpensive basketball party at all. In fact, our entire party cost roughly $50 to throw together and we invited 10 guests. That included drinks, food and decorations. The entertainment of course was the game!

How to Throw an Inexpensive Basketball Party

The three elements to any good party are:

  • Food & Drink
  • Decorations
  • Entertainment

Food & Drink:

Food is often the mostly costly aspect of a party, but it does not have to be. Shop smart! Obviously the size of your guest list will matter. There are dozens of items you can serve that would follow your theme, and they definitely don’t have to all be basketball themed. For the most part we stuck to small bites and snacks for our party, rather than serving a meal.  We had a total of 10 guests at our party and tried to keep our food budget under $40. We used NO coupons, but we did shop sales. We also turned to Cheese-It brand for many of the snacks. Why? Well, Cheez-It is dedicated to using only 100% real cheese, which is baked into every delicious cracker, so we thought it made a great snack. Plus they are orange and they create great Snackable Moments!

For food, we stuck to snacks. We made sure we had both sweet and salty covered.

What we served:

Snacks: Cheez-It Crunch’d, Cheez-It Grooves (which we found at Walmart both on a special display in the back of the store AND down the cracker aisle!)

Candy: Several types of candy, gum, chocolate and rock candy

Drinks: Orange Sport Drinks, Several 2 Liter Bottles of Soda

Decorations

To keep the cost of decorations down, we just went with a simple orange and black theme with a few fun basketball themed items in there and we tried to incorporate some of the food into the decorations.

Streamers: We used streamers across the table and in a few places in the room. We went pretty simple, but they were inexpensive and added some extra color.

Whistles: We found cute basketball whistles in the party supply section that we just draped over the orange sport drinks.

Balls and Nets: We used actual basketballs in several places in the room, we also had a basketball on the food table. We had smaller balls all over the place. The nets can be used for several things. We had a few on various tables, but we also hung a few on the wall with the streamers. They would look great wrapped around a vase or cake stand as well.

Candy: Because we kept everything with an orange and black theme, the candy acted as decorations too.

Plates, Cups, Napkins & Plasticware: Incorporating these things adds more visual appeal and color to your table. We just stuck to orange and black again, though we did find basketball themed plates and napkins. So you can go whatever way you want.

 Entertainment:

There really should be no cost involved in entertainment unless you plan to have other activities for those not interested in the game. The game is your center focus, so it’s a freebie. If you are looking for other things to do, here are a few inexpensive ideas:

Games: Playing board games is an option for those not interested in the game. You can use what you have on hand, or even create your own game.

Movies: You can always throw a movie on in another room for those that might not be interested in the game. You could even find a basketball themed movie or simply just watch something everyone agrees on.

Crafts: Think basketball themed, but honestly any craft will do. We had a few kids at our party, so we took photos of them pretending to “slam dunk” a basketball into a net. Our craft for the involved painting and decorating a picture frame.

Creamy Bacon and Onion Cheese-It Grooves

Creamy Bacon and Onion Cheese-It Grooves

Yield: Serves 10-12 people
Prep Time: 25 minutes
Total Time: 25 minutes

These Creamy Bacon and Onion Cheese-It Grooves are a great appetizer for any get together! The taste of Cheese-It Grooves mixed with a flavorful combination of creamy onion dip and bacon. So delish!

Ingredients

  • 1 Box of Cheese-It Grooves
  • 1 package of bacon, cooked
  • 1-2 cups of French Onion Dip, homemade or store bought
  • Green onions, chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. Layer crackers on serving platters. (we had three platters full)
  2. Using a piping bag or a plastic baggie with an edge snipped, spoon the french onion dip into the bag and then pipe on top of each cracker.
  3. Top each one with a piece of bacon. I didn’t actually crumble them, I sliced them into bite size pieces. (see photo) But you could crumble them and add crumbled bacon to the top.
  4. The second time we made this recipe we chopped green onion and sprinkled a few on each cracker, then topped with bacon. At first we thought it would be too much onion, but it was NOT! So good!
