Ingredients and Substitutions for Chocolate Peanut Butter Parfaits

The best part of this dessert is that it has only six ingredients. These parfaits are super easy and use easily sourced ingredients!

  • chocolate instant pudding – when we first started making these, the box sizes were 3.9 oz. so you may see that mentioned, but now when we go to find instant pudding, we find 3.4oz. Buy either size, as following the recipe instructions will still work.
  • vanilla instant pudding – in order to make the actual recipe – the peanut butter pudding out of this, you will definitely need the vanilla pudding, but if you wanted to change the flavor, you can omit the vanilla and peanut butter here and use a different flavor for a different kind of dessert.
  • milk – you can use whatever milk you like, but we have found that 2% or whole milk seems to make this dessert creamier and give it a richer flavor.
  • peanut butter – any peanut butter will do but we either use reese’s peanut butter or skippy peanut butter in these. creamy, not chunky.
  • whipped cream – store-bought or homemade
  • mini peanut butter cups – you can use just finely chopped chocolate or even mini chocolate chips we just like chopping the peanut butter cups up for more delicious chocolate peanut butter flavor.

How To Make, Store and Serve Chocolate Peanut Butter Parfaits

As I have mentioned, this recipe can be made up ahead of time. I suggest waiting to layer them until right before serving since you’re using a delicate middle layer of fluffy, whipped cream.

  • To make Chocolate Peanut Butter Parfaits: simply follow the recipe directions below and ensure you have a full 1-2 hours for the pudding to chill and fully set.
  • To store Chocolate Peanut Butter Parfaits: It is best to store the separate puddings unlayered in the refrigerator in sealed containers for 5-7 days. The whipped cream will not last that long if homemade. If you have layered desserts leftover at the end, cover with saran wrap and enjoy within 24-48 hours.
  • To Serve Chocolate Peanut Butter Parfaits: We made ours for a gameday party we were hosting the day we took these photos. We make them all the time for dessert at home, we just serve in any clear glass bowl, mini trifle dish, pudding dish or glass. If hosting a party, we recommend these mini plastic trifle bowls because they are perfect and even come with the mini spoons! We always have these on hand.
