Yep, you know me. No Wordless Wednesday is ever wordless. This one will not be the exception, mostly because I am so incredibly proud and honored to have been witness to this moment.
This past weekend, the Lewis and Clark Fife & Drum corps. attended the Patriot Days Rally in Rolla, Missouri. So my Wordless Wednesday is a photo taken that evening with a very special guest. You can click the photo to see it bigger. Keep reading to find out who that is. It’s awesome.
We performed several times that evening, marched around and met lots of amazing, wonderful people. But the highlight for most of us, had to be meeting Hershel “Woody” Williams (pictured with the LCFDC corps. above). He is the only living Medal of Honor recipient from the Battle of Iwo Jima.
He gave a speech, told us a story about the famous Iwo Jima Marine photo. You know it. It’s this one.
Photo from: Photobucket.
Except the story was actually about the original photo below, not the photo of the statue above.
It was actually a pretty funny story, which none of us saw coming. Woody is an amazing man, who has been through experiences we would never understand and come out at the other end, one of the nicest, most genuine men I’ve had the pleasure to meet.
For the record, the one holding the American flag is my daughter, affectionately referred to on this blog as Mini-Chef. My son is next to her with our city flag. My other daughter is the one standing next to the bass drummer in the front. I have another daughter that was not at the event who holds the corps. flag.
So that’s my Wordless Wednesday. What’s yours?
