Why Romance? It’s a question I keep getting asked. In fact, it’s probably the one question everyone asks when they find out I have done a little genre jumping.
First of all, I need to say right now, it’s not a new genre for me. It’s just new to the world. With that said, let me explain. I have been writing romance and erotic fiction since I was fairly young. When I say young, I mean young. I started writing romance fiction when I was probably about 12 or 13. There wasn’t any dirty bits in there yet, but there was a lot of kissing and loving. The dirty bits were the things I read about, rather than wrote about. And trust me, back then I was pretty curious about everything.
Somewhere around age 15 or so, I remember getting my hands on a dirty film. I honestly cannot remember from where, because believe you me, in my devout Catholic household, there was never such a thing. Anyway, a friend and I watched it, and were a little grossed out. The actors were ugly and overweight and really pretty disgusting. So instead of all the dirty bits being interesting, I was pretty repulsed for awhile. Then, I realized that I could write them better. I could make them beautiful with my words. A quick side note, I later discovered that the male lead was played by Ron Jeremy. Need I say more?
The other thing I learned way back then (remember, I was in a pretty devout Catholic household) is that dirty bits were never talked about. Ever. And if you so much as thought about them, you were a sinner and going to Hell. Well, apparently, I’m heading to Hell. As any normal rebellious teenager discovers, when you are forbidden from doing something, it becomes all the more a curious thing. Thus was born a love for writing not only romance, but some erotic fiction as well.
And now here were are, nearly 20 years after that romance passion was born, trying to get it published. So you see, it’s not new. I didn’t switch from YA to romance. It’s always been there, always been seeded and really, if you could see the sheer amount of stories written and saved on my computer, you will quickly find out that this has always been there. It will always be there. 🙂
How long have you been writing romance?
