mashed cauliflower and broccoli

Today the Secret Recipe Club comes together to remember a wonderful man and pay tribute to his life, by creating a recipe from his wonderful food blog – The Haggis and the Herring.

Daniel Saraga

There are sometimes no words to express how deeply something saddens us or effects us. This post is a little different than most I post.

Oh, it includes a recipe. A really delicious recipe. But it’s not mine.

It belongs to Daniel Saraga from The Haggis and the Herring, who passed away rather suddenly on Friday, September 14, 2012 leaving behind a beautiful wife named Meredith and three children.

One of those children he never had the chance to meet. That’s right, Meredith is pregnant with their third child.

I won’t pretend I know what she is going through right now. I can’t even imagine how difficult this is, but my post isn’t about that.

It’s a Memorial to Daniel, a remembrance and celebration of the great life he lived.

And if you don’t believe me, please go read Meredith’s beautiful Eulogy that she gave for her beloved husband. It’s a bit more personal than I can get, being that I only had the pleasure of meeting Daniel online.

What I do know about Daniel is that he was one of the kindest, most supportive food bloggers out there. He always had a positive comment or praise for something.

To anyone who knew him or had the pleasure of talking to him, he was always happy, very supportive and how he loved to cook. His blog is filled with countless amazing dishes that paid tribute to his heritage and clearly also to his great love of food.

Daniel won’t be forgotten. His memory will live on, and I hope and pray that the family will figure out a way to keep that blog alive.

His wife Meredith also blogs over there, she bakes delicious treats too. I have a folder with about 10 items from their blog that I’ve been meaning to try, a fine mix of things by both of them.

When I found out about the tribute for Daniel, there was no doubt I wanted to create something from his blog and honor his memory, and the man that he was.

When I looked for something to make, I first went through the folder of links I have, and found the Mashed Cauliflower and Broccoli recipe and knew it was the one the instant I saw it.

I was looking for something comforting, a comfort food to warm the soul and make me feel better.

This was the recipe to do that.

It’s a much tastier version of mashed potatoes… except without the potatoes, and with Cauliflower and Broccoli instead – oh, and much, much healthier.

The flavor was outstanding. As I said, Daniel knew how to cook and he made some of the most delicious food and this one is no exception.

My children loved it as much as I did, which is how you can 100% ensure a recipe is a winner.

Thank you Daniel, for the wonderful recipe from your equally wonderful blog. Thank you for sharing your love of cooking with all of us, as you touched each of us differently with your passion for wonderful food.

You will be missed and your memory will remain as a reminder to us to live everyday to it’s fullest, enjoy our families and to cook and eat good food.

I will continue to pray for your family. Your wife that she finds the strength she needs to accept this and take care of herself and those precious beautiful children.

I pray for your children that they will always know their dad and that their acceptance and understanding will come in time.

I pray for your family and friends who are grieving their incredible loss – that they too shall find the peace to accept and support Meredith during this time. You will surely be missed by all who loved you Daniel. Goodbye.

  1. Thank you for such a wonderful tribute to my brother. It is tough to explain how much I miss him already. I have ensured that Haggis and Herring will remain online. That is for sure. In time, when we are ready we hope to continue to post to his blog. Although it may be more Meredith than myself, as I don’t really consider myself a great cook. I just cook gluten free for the health of my wife and share those adventures with everyone 🙂

    Cheers,
