Flavor Ideas and How To Make Them

Here are some exciting flavor variations to explore when making your own homemade tortilla chips:

Spicy Delights:

  • Classic Chili Lime: A timeless favorite, this combination utilizes chili powder, lime juice, and a touch of cumin for a zesty and flavorful kick.
  • Smoky Chipotle: For a smoky depth of flavor, incorporate chipotle chili powder or a touch of smoked paprika.
  • Jalapeno Fiesta: Add chopped fresh jalapenos or jalapeno powder for a more pronounced heat.

Herbal and Savory Adventures:

  • Garlic Parmesan: Never underestimate the power of garlic powder and grated parmesan cheese for a savory and cheesy experience.
  • Italian Herb Blend: Sprinkle dried oregano, basil, and rosemary for a burst of Italian herb flavor.
  • Everything Bagel Seasoning: This trendy spice blend offers a delightful combination of onion, garlic, sesame seeds, and poppy seeds.

Sweet and Salty Surprises:

  • Cinnamon Sugar: For a sweet and unexpected twist, try sprinkling a mixture of cinnamon sugar on the tortilla wedges before baking.
  • Honey Chipotle: Combine the sweet heat of chipotle chili powder with a touch of honey for a unique and balanced flavor.

Global Inspirations:

  • Taco Seasoning: Take inspiration from your favorite tacos by using store-bought taco seasoning or create your own blend with chili powder, cumin, paprika, and garlic powder.
  • French Onion Dip: Elevate your chips by incorporating the flavors of french onion dip mix for a savory and slightly sweet taste.
  • Everything Asian: Experiment with a combination of soy sauce, sriracha, and sesame oil for an Asian-inspired chip experience.

Tips for Flavoring:

  • Seasoning both sides: Ensure even flavor distribution by seasoning both sides of the tortilla wedges before baking.
  • Lighter hand with liquids: When using wet ingredients like lime juice or hot sauce, start with a smaller amount and gradually add more to avoid soggy chips.
  • Let the flavors meld: After tossing the tortilla wedges with your chosen seasonings, let them sit for a few minutes to allow the flavors to meld before baking.

No matter your preference, there’s a world of flavor waiting to be explored with homemade tortilla chips. Get creative, experiment with different spice combinations, and discover your own personal favorites!

We did the butter on the flour tortilla and then sprinkled a mixture of cinnamon and sugar over the chips. HEAVEN!! (and my house smells great!)

So think about it – you can sprinkle any sort of seasoning you want. You could make them more like Dorito’s brand chips by sprinkling some Taco seasoning on them. The possibilities are endless.

Ingredients

  • 10 Flour Tortillas or Homemade Flour Tortillas
  • 1 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoons garlic salt
  • 2 Tablespoons butter melted

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, combine the chili powder, garlic salt and ground cumin.
  • Brush butter or olive oil on one side of each flour tortilla.
  • Sprinkle the seasoning mixture over each flour tortilla. If you desire more flavoring per tortilla double the seasoning ahead of time.
  • Cut each flour tortilla into 8 wedges (like you’re cutting a pizza).
  • Place them on an ungreased cookie sheet or pan and place in the oven at 400 degrees for at 6-8 minutes. Six minutes usually makes a softer, chewier chip. Eight minutes makes a crispy chip (but be careful because they burn easily).
  • Remove from the oven and dump in a bowl. Serve with sour cream, salsa or guacamole.
