The season of giving back is upon us, and it’s my favorite time of year. Throughout the year I work with all types of people, from police officers and firefighters to hospice workers, stay at home moms to dads that work 50+ hours a week, and all of them find time to give extra through volunteering their time and other resources . I love being part of the celebration to thank them for each time they give extra for us. These people give extra all year long and now it’s time for us to say thank you for all they do.
Throughout the year we deliver gift baskets full of baked goods and Extra Gum to thank them for “going the extra mile”. We visit police officers, firefighters, paramedics and other public figures who give of themselves everyday. It’s wonderful to see my children giving back, as well as see the people we take for granted each day with smiles on their faces, interacting with my children.
With gift baskets overflowing, we head out with a car full and drive all over town delivering them. You might be surprised to see the looks on their faces when they realize we are bringing something for them. Many of our community leaders and workers are forgotten about, or taken for granted and this small gesture means so much to them.
In edition to the overflowing gift baskets, we also love making up small little packets with Extra Gum, and attaching a little tag that reads “Thank you for always going the “extra” mile!”. At holiday time (because we hand those out all year long) we try to make them a little extra special and throw in a gift card too. The possibilities are endless, but regardless of what you decide to do, it’s time to say Thank you to those that are often overlooked or only remembered at holiday time. As a parent, it is important to teach our children these values, and as a mom it feels good knowing I am showing my children how to Give Extra.
