It never fails to amaze me how many people wind up changing their story and plot that they have worked so hard on for the prior weeks, just a few days after NaNo starts. I was one of them last year at about 7K. I wound up scrapping that 7K, and did a whole new story. It was crazy, but I was happier for it at the end.
This year, I spend weeks getting my idea organized and all the details ironed out and I was really excited. Only to have day one come and go and have the direction my character was going completely change. It’s strange. My old male MC isn’t even in the book this time and yet the words are still flowing. This time I didn’t have to scrap anything since for the most part, everything still made sense with the changes but still….
So currently as of this morning, I am about 4K and that was with a little plot manipulation and some additions to the two chapters I was working on yesterday and the day before.
I try to hard to quiet or lock up my internal editor but she is persistent (and I am a perfectionist apparently), and so today was my one and only day for her to get a little say in the novel. She’s been locked back up with some candy and I’m on my own with my characters at this point and all is going well.
I’ll check in tonight with a final word count. Oh, and my 11 year old step daughter who is doing NaNo this year – managed over 4K over the weekend. She was ahead of me. Yowsers! LOL It will be interesting to see what she does today after school.
