I crossed the 5,000 word mark today in my novel and I am ahead of the game, which makes me smile. Not that it really matters much, but eventually I am sure I will run into a little creativity block, and it would be nice to have time to work through it without feeling rushed. Novel writing is time consuming, because sadly when I am not writing, I am still thinking about my protagonist. She has basically become my best friend.
It’s funny where I left off in the story. The protagonists best friend just entered the room where the protagonists husband is sound asleep with a young woman. Yeah.
So, she sits on the bed and says “Hi.” in probably the most conversational way she can. It makes me laugh even now thinking about it. I know, I’m strange. I just envision this stupid guy groggily looking up at his wife’s best friend and she says simply: “Hi.”. I think it makes him freak out even more. hehehe
When I am writing, I often think about other authors and books that I have read. I have a diverse collection of books and enjoy several different authors from varying genre types. I think about scenes I liked, and scenes that worked well. Two of my favorite authors that I have yet to find a book that wasn’t well written or thought out are Nicholas Sparks and Lavyrl Spencer. Again, two very different types of authors. I also adore Jodi Picoult and her writing style.
I just keep myself motivated by thinking of the things I enjoy about their books. Why the characters react the way they do to each other, what would have happened if the author had chosen to change on detail of the book (usually a crappy book would probably occur) and basically how they made it all work.
I have never read a book like I am writing, so I am curious to see how it writes itself. There was very little outlining to do for the story, because the characters keep telling me what they want to say. Plus, I sort of drown out my own voices in my head by turning the music up and blocking the internal biatch that seems to want to correct all my darn grammar, and spelling issues. That’s for later. I am an author right now. I can be an editor in December.
Who are your favorite authors? What books do you totally love that are well-written?
